The victory on 15th of May, 2016, against a beleaguered Aston Villa side was something that Arsenal fans already expected. Especially since Aston Villa’s horrendous record in the 2015/2016 Premier League. I mean, they won a whopping 3 games. Out of 38. Even if it is indeed the comparatively competitive English Premier League, this result is still absolutely horrendous. So the win against a horrible Villa side is a must for the Gunners of North London. However, what we all Gooners and other football (or soccer, if you prefer that term) fans did not predict is the comical implosion of one of the best Spurs side in ages.
For you see, Tottenham was expected by many football enthusiasts to finish ahead of Arsenal, though still at 2nd place against the sporting fairy tale that is Leicester thanks in part on Spurs’ failure to beat a horribly out-of-form Chelsea (Spurs are, in my opinion, single-handedly responsible for Hazard’s regaining his form and confidence). This would have been the first time Spurs have finished ahead of Arsenal since 1995, i.e. 21 years ago. Some Arsenal fans have lost hope, accepting this season is a failure, where even though other traditional rivals under-perform, Arsenal still does not win the league since 2004/2005. But Spurs own implosion helped Arsenal leapfrog them to 2nd place. Spurs lost 5-1, to an already relegated Newcastle. Though I accept that we Gunners have not been as consistent as Spurs in the beginning, their lack of mental fortitude causes them to go through the motion and gifted Arsenal’s highest league finish since they last won it. This particular event, as was the 21 others preceding it, is celebrated mockingly as St. Totteringham’s Day, to illustrate that North London is still ‘red’.
This particular happening this year is not as unlikely as the one in 2006 (though that one was less amusing, since it involves food poisoning), though it surpasses the season of Mind The Gap where Spurs has a 12 point head start at some point in the season yet still end up behind Arsenal (that may have been in 2012, and as much as I loathe them, Chelsea did Arsenal a favor b
